The Helping Hands Project is a collaboration between Crossroads and the local elementary schools in association with BackPack Buddies of Bluffton. School social workers identify families who need assistance with food, employment support, financial counseling, recovery support, literacy and education or other needs that Crossroads or collaborative partners may be able to address. The current focus is between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
BackPack Buddies provides nutritious food to elementary school students who are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. Every Friday afternoon during the school year they are given a back pack full of nutritious food—proteins, cereals, milk, fruit and granola bars. At the end of the school year, the children are given vouchers to go to the Bluffton Farmers Market to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for themselves and their families.
